The rotunda of the Greene County courthouse has been decorated with a very tall tree for decades, but for the first time, the lighting of the tree was a community event.

Organized by the Jefferson Matters: Main Street promotions committee, the “Holiday Sparkle Community Tree Lighting” event was held last Thursday, Dec. 5. The St Joseph Church choir sang carols as people gathered. As dark fell in the courthouse, the huge tree was lit after a countdown from 10. The United Methodist Church bell choir rang festive bells from the second floor of the courthouse as the lights came on.

Dave Bohnet read “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” and Santa and Mrs Claus were on hand. The 80 or so children and adults present received certificates for free cookies across the street at Homestead Bakery. Free rides to the top of the Bell Tower with Mr and Mrs Claus were also part of the fun.

About 40 children and 40 adults gathered
